Magnets can make a big difference in the way a slot car performs, both in terms of speed and handling. Upgrading magnets is one of the best ways to improve the performance of any slot car.

Increasing the strength of a slot car's traction magnets will improve handling and cornering speeds, while improving the motor magnets will increase straight-line speed.

When increasing traction magnet strength it's important to remember that a stronger traction magnet will exert more downforce due to the increased magnetic attraction of the magnets and the track power rails.

This increased downforce may actually slow a slot car down if the motor is not powerful enough to overcome the additional drag that stronger traction magnets can exert.

The table shown below lists the relative magnet strengths for all factory box-stock ready to run (RTR) slot cars. All magnet strengths were measured using an AlphLabs Model 1 DC Gaussmeter. Your meter may give slightly different results, but the relative strengths of various magnets should coincide with the table below.

Along with factory box-stock magnets I also sell a line of Polymer magnets that are direct replacements for factory box-stock magnets. These magnets will greatly improve the performance of any box-stock RTR slot car, while still allowing the use of your wall-pack style power packs.

A high-quality gauss meter is essential for accurately measuring and matching motor and traction magnets.

If you're really serious about your racing you'll want a precision instrument capable of accurately measuring a magnets strength.

The Professional Gauss Meter shown at the right is what I use to test all of my magnets. It can accurately measure motor and traction magnet strengths up to 20,000 Gauss. That's well beyond the range of any slot car magnet sold for slot car racing purposes.
